live productions

productions i have had the honor of seeing live! a lot of these were put on at my university, but i've seen a couple of professional ones as well.

a chorus line 💖

⭐⭐⭐⭐

seen: live, 1 time | 2017, student production, as part of crew

notes: i helped stage manage this with zero background knowledge of this particular show. i thought our cast + crew was very good and it was one of the better productions i saw at my school, although i may be very biased. i count all the times i saw it as one

a clockwork orange

⭐⭐⭐

seen: live, 1 time | 2017, off-broadway, with friend S

notes: we were in the front row and there was a lot of male torso and eye contact. very sexy

another country

⭐⭐

seen: 201?, live, 1 time | ?, west end, with family

notes: i remember finding it kind of slow, but would like to see it again now that i'm older

avenue Q

⭐⭐⭐

seen: live, 1 time | 2017, off-broadway, with family

notes: this musical would NOT fly now but i still kind of like it lmao. love the puppets!!

bare

⭐⭐

seen: live, 1 time | 2019, student production, with friend R

notes: the production was bad

bat boy

⭐⭐

seen: live, 1 time | 2017, student production, with friend K

notes: i think i pregamed this, but definitely not enough to Not remember it. so it was probably not all that memorable... i got to design the poster for this production though!

beautiful

⭐⭐⭐⭐

seen: live, 1 time | 2017, broadway, with family

notes: really wonderful production and story!

book of mormon

⭐⭐⭐⭐

seen: live, 1 time | 2015?, broadway, with family

notes: cut down a star bc not everything in the album is a banger sadly. but i was lucky to see gavin creel as elder price!!!

charlie and the chocolate factory

⭐⭐

seen: i don't know if i can say i saw it, but it was live | 2013, summer program, as part of the cast.......

notes: i really don't know why i signed up to this program a second time. i don't act and i get stage fright. (scroll down to sleeping beauty for more context)

dirty rotten scoundrels

⭐⭐⭐

seen: live, 1 time | 201?, west end, with family

excalibur

⭐⭐⭐

seen: live, 2 times | 2019, seoul – once by myself and once with friend R

⭐⭐⭐

seen: live, 1 time | 2019?, student production, think i went alone...?

notes: i feel like i would have five-starred it if i saw a professional production

lion king

⭐⭐⭐

seen: live, 1 time | 201?, australian production, with family

notes: i simply do not like lion king THAT much, although it was very good

mamma mia

phoebe in winter

⭐⭐⭐⭐

seen: live, 1 time | 2020, student production, i went alone maybe?

priscilla, queen of the desert

⭐⭐

seen: live, 1 time | i have no idea when, but i went with family

notes: i really remember almost nothing about this, so it gets a low rating... i'm sorry...

sleeping beauty

seen: again, i don't know if i can say i saw it, but it was live | 2012, summer program, i was in the cast....

notes: i joined a summer theatre program because some of my friends were in it and it felt more like an excuse to socialize than put on a production. i don't necessarily regret it but i am NOT comfortable on a stage LMAO. also our production was really nothing great!!!

spring awakening

⭐⭐

seen: live, 1 time | 2017, student production, with friend K

notes: i think i just went because i knew a cute boy was in the production? i heard their rehearsal sched was brutal though

the phantom of the opera

⭐⭐

seen: live, 1 time | 201?, ????, definitely with family

notes: it was great and i know the dynamic of the phantom and christine really fucks but i cannot get into the music and seriousness of it all. i'm so sorry. i love to laugh

the pillowman

⭐⭐⭐⭐

seen: live, 1 time | 2017, university production, with who????

notes: this made me feel so much. i want to see it again and remember!

waitress 💖

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

seen: live, 1 time | 2017, broadway, with my siblings

notes: i saw sara bareilles and she was really wonderful! i love the story + songs of waitress so this is an easy five stars.

wicked 💖

⭐⭐⭐⭐

seen: live, 2 time | once was in 2011, maybe? it's been so long... anyway, both times were with family

notes: this was the first musical i saw live, so it holds a special place in my heart, even though the lyrics are Like That.

movie musicals or recorded productions

i didn't include any fully-animated productions because... i am lazy + i usually like them anyway... just assume i like any animated movie musicals.

enchanted

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

notes: ok i know i said what i said about la la land but the difference is. that i like enchanted

grease (1978)

⭐⭐⭐

notes: i thought it was so silly when i first saw it (i was probably 9?) but i might like it more if i watched it again. soundtrack still slaps.

hairspray (2007) 💖

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

notes: it was so much fun, and i loved the visuals! and what a great soundtrack.

hamilton

⭐⭐⭐⭐

notes: i watched the disney recording. say what you will about it but i really enjoyed it! i'm a very casual fan but i'm impressed by how it got me to care about guys i would literally never care about otherwise. i docked off one star just bc i do not memorize the soundtrack like i would with other musicals i'm obsessed with, lol.

high school musical 1, 2, 3

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

notes: my childhood! i can't not be biased

into the woods (2014)

⭐⭐⭐

notes: it was ok!

la la land (2016)

⭐⭐

notes: i hesitated to put this here because like, Five singable songs does not make a musical to me!!!! i did not care for these characters and their struggles, and found the songs (besides the opening, which i've grown to appreciate) not memorable. i promise i don't hate romance and bittersweetness, but everyone hyped it up and loved it SO much, and i just remember sitting there like "THAT'S IT?" after the movie ended, doubly annoyed at them for getting my hopes up. anyway, it was pretty i guess. just very non-theatre-person's-idea-of-what-a-musical-is – and i'm not even much of a theatre person.

legally blonde 💖

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

notes: FOREVER. I LOVE THIS MUSICAL FOREVER... cannot explain how much this show means to me. i watched the MTV recording and still play the whole thing in the background sometimes while i work if i need a pick-me-up. i like it even more than the movie.

les miserables (2012)

⭐⭐

notes: don't remember much of it, cried one (1) time. maybe i should give it another chance, but somehow i don't think i'll like it any better – the music's just not for me.

mamma mia (2008) 💖

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

notes: comfort movie forever. no skip soundtrack. perfection

mary poppins returns

⭐⭐

notes: just not for me. maybe too young?

rock of ages

⭐⭐⭐

notes: actually really liked this one! this made me decide to try pole

singin' in the rain (1952)

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

notes: so so fun and good!!! the og!!!

west side story (1961)

⭐⭐

notes: i watched it when i was 11 i think, and really did not like it. i thought tony was so stupid, and i didn't care for the music. some parts were pretty though, and i liked america.

west side story (2021)

⭐⭐⭐⭐

notes: i liked this one a lot more, but maybe that also had to do with me growing up lol. really great cast – save for tony again, ugh – and cinematography. not a super banger soundtrack still, but i love what they did with the musical numbers. particularly loved america, i feel pretty, and gee, officer krupke.
